The Edge: Could the Atari VCS be getting a new Lord Of The Rings

In a recent announcement by European game developer and publisher Daedalic Entertainment, they have a new partnership with Middle-earth Enterprises, a division of The Saul Zaentz Company, to develop and publish The Lord of the Rings – Gollum.

As one of Europe's best publishers and developers, Since 2007, Daedalic has continued to earn awards for creating innovative games across multiple platforms, including Deponia, Edna & Harvey, Silence, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth, and The Long Journey Home. Their most recent announcement might have hinted a bit of good news for Atari VCS backers and those who are pre-ordering Atari's new console from GameStop, Walmart, and Atari.

The Lord of the Rings – Gollum is the first video game to be born out of the new fellowship forged between Daedalic Entertainment and Middle-earth Enterprises, with scope for more new experiences in the future. The new title will remain true to the vision laid out in J.R.R Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and will also explore new events and details related to Gollum’s journey. The Lord of the Rings - Gollum will be powered by Unreal Engine and will be localised into multiple languages so that fans from across the globe will be able to enjoy this new action adventure.

“We are extremely pleased to announce our partnership with multi-award-winning Daedalic Entertainment, to build an innovative, lore-centric game for discerning fans of The Lord of the Rings. With their focus on characters and story, enhanced by rich and evocative artwork, Daedalic is committed to ‘building games for readers who become gamers", commented Fredrica Drotos, Brand Officer for Middle-earth Enterprises.  “We eagerly anticipate the release of Daedalic’s narrative-driven adventure gameplay, which is uniquely matched to the complex, deeply-nuanced world of Middle-earth, created by J.R.R. Tolkien.”
“At a time when the games industry is undergoing structural changes and seeing new business models evolve, we are excited to realize a huge new production based on a story that has stayed fresh and relevant for more than 60 years. Other currently planned media productions based on J.R.R. Tolkien's work are testament to that.”
So what was it from the new announcement from Daedalic that could be good news for the Atari VCS? In the announcement, they hinted that the all-new action adventure title is being brought to life in-house by Daedalic Entertainment’s award-winning development team and is set for release in 2021 on PC and all relevant console platforms at that time. With the release of the new Atari VCS console set for March of 2020, the recent Lord Of The Rings - Gollum game announcement might be one of the first hints of games being planned for the Atari VCS.
